Raymond Hains, who died in 2005, was a key artist of the ‘Nouveaux Réalistes’ movement, along with César, Arman, Yves Klein (remove the comma) and the mythical couple Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely, among others. In 2004, he decided to work with bronze for the first time, a medium that was totally new to him. He imagined reproducing the sailors' little metal suitcase, using lost wax casting. Each one of them held some of the books that were instrumental to him, one of them even annotated by the artist himself. The time required for developing each multiple has exceeded the duration of his own life.
Hains, a European cousin of the American Claes Oldenburg, created a giant bronze matchstick of 2.40 m high. This artist loved above all the complexity of our beautiful French language. To this day, he has left us with the whiff of a man who loved words, a ‘three-strip billiard’ mind we have not yet quite managed to define.
Cyrille Putman Contemporary Art Gallery selects the artists it represents. We guarantee the originality and authenticity of the works sold on our website.
Raymond Hains’s pieces come with a certificate from the artist’s estate.
